Share Experiences
Gather the children in a circle. Distribute copies of
the first handout, “We Celebrate the Life of Jesus.”
Before beginning the prayer, practice with the
children their response: “Help us to hear your
Word.”
Discover Scripture and Doctrine
First Reading: Introduce the reading: Isaiah was
one of God’s prophets. God sent Isaiah to comfort
people who had to leave their country because
of war.
If you have early readers in the group, assign
readers for the parts of the four Isaiahs. Otherwise,
read aloud the passage to the children, and have
them join together in the response.
Gospel: If you have early readers in the group,
assign readers for the parts of Storytellers 1 and
2 and Jesus. Read together the story of Jesus’
healing of the deaf man.
Live the Scripture
Read aloud the introduction. Then talk with the
children about the Scripture reading. Ask:
● What good things does Jesus do for the man
who cannot hear?
● What do you think the man tells others about
Jesus afterward?
● Who teaches you about Jesus?
● Whom do you teach about Jesus?
Have the children complete the drawing
activity on Handout 1. If time permits, have the
children also complete Handout 2, “I Hear and
Speak About Jesus.” Invite them to share their
drawings.
● Copies of the handouts
“We Celebrate the Life
of Jesus” and “I Hear and
Speak About Jesus,” one
copy of each for each child
● Crayons for each child
For Catechists and Teachers
In this session the children will become familiar with the way the Church
celebrates the life of Jesus throughout the Liturgical Year. Remind the
children that we use calendars to help us remember important dates
in our families. In the same way the Church has a calendar that helps us
remember and celebrate important events in the life of Jesus. This calendar
is called the Liturgical Calendar or Liturgical Year.
Explain that at Mass we listen to readings from the Bible that tell us about
Jesus throughout the Liturgical Year. These readings come from the
Gospels, the books of the Bible that tell us the Good News of Jesus’ birth,
his life, his Death on the Cross, and his Resurrection. We learn how Jesus
sent the Holy Spirit to his disciples. We hear the same stories Jesus told his
followers to teach them, and we discover all the ways he helped people.

Live the Scripture
Leader: We can use our ears to listen carefully to God’s Word in the Bible.
We can use our mouths to tell others about Jesus. We can use our minds
and hearts to try to always be good followers of Jesus.
We Learn About Jesus
You just heard a Gospel story about how Jesus healed a man. At Mass we
learn about Jesus by listening to Gospel stories about his life.
What stories about Jesus do you know? On each page of this open Bible,
draw a picture of your favorite story about Jesus.
