   Step 4 (15 Minutes)
Have the young people pair up with different partners to work
on Activity 2. Ask them to begin by writing the descriptions on their own, without referring to the Catechism.
When the groups have nished, ask them to read the paragraphs of the Catechism of the Catholic Church that are cited to decide what changes and additions to make in their descriptions. Provide at least one copy of the Catechism for each pair of students. They may also nd it online at kofc.org/en/catechism.
When the pairs have nished, ask them to share their descriptions in large-group discussion. Write the symbols as headings on the board. As each new element of a symbol is mentioned, record it under the appropriate heading.
Step 5 (10 Minutes)
Read or have a volunteer read “Receiving the Gifts of the Holy Spirit” and the de nitions of the gifts. Provide a brief pause after each de nition for comments or questions. Encourage the young people to explore each de nition. Ask these or similar questions:
• Whatdoesthisde ni onmean to you?
• Howwouldyoudescribethis
gi ? When everyone who wishes has had a chance to contribute to the discussion,
    • Howwouldyouexpectthis gi to be lived out?
• Whodoyouknowwho possesses and uses this gi in a special way? How so?
conclude by making these points:

Lesson 4
Receiving the Gifts of the Holy Spirit
In Con rmation, we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit—permanent dispositions that help us follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit. With these gifts, we are able to live lives guided by the Holy Spirit and, in doing so, build the Church.
Wisdom helps us seek and know the truth as God sees it.
Understanding gives us con dence in the truth and awareness of how to act on it.
Counsel, or right judgment, empowers us to discern good from evil.
Fortitude gives us the inner strength, or courage, to stand up for our faith and live according to it.
Knowledge gives us the opportunity to re ect on the life of the Trinity and the oneness of God’s being in three interrelated, equal Divine Persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We seek to know God as any human being knows his or her parents.
Piety, or reverence, helps us
to worship God, especially by participating fully in the liturgical life of the Church. This gift also helps us to have an active personal prayer life and to respect others.
Fear of the Lord, or wonder and awe in God’s presence, allows us
to recognize all of life and creation as a gift from God, work on our relationship with God, and respond to the needs of others.
