Scripture Background
We hear another of Jesus’ parables this Sunday. Jesus tells about a king who wants to celebrate his son’s wedding in the most festive way possible. When the invited guests refuse his invitation, he calls in the poor and outcast. Matthew dwells on the fate of the guests who refused the king’s invitation. Seeds stresses instead the king’s desire to share his happiness with everyone.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
“Since the Eucharist is the ‘source and summit of the Christian life,’ catechesis for the Eucharist recognizes it as the heart of Christian life for the whole Church, for dioceses and parishes, and for each individual Christian” (NDC, 36A.3; see also CCC, 775–776).
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus presents God as one who cannot get enough of our company. God wants everyone at the banquet table of the Eucharist on earth and at the heavenly banquet. Children understand celebrations. Seeds uses the celebration theme to introduce the children to the concept of Sunday Mass as Christians gathering for Jesus’ celebration.
Sharing the Lesson with Families
Encourage parents to reinforce the gathering for Mass theme by helping their child feel comfortable in your parish church. Suggest that they visit the church together, let their child touch the altar, see what is behind the lectern (ambo), and notice the sanctuary light and tabernacle. Familiarity with the church building gives a child a sense of belonging.
