Only a priest or bishop can consecrate the bread and wine for the Eucharist. But it is not actually the bishop or priest who changes the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. It is the Holy Spirit who comes upon the gifts of bread and wine that are offered to God. It

The words used by the priest to consecrate the bread and wine are the same words Jesus spoke the night before he died: “This is my Body, which will be given up for you. ... This is the chalice of my Blood.”

Receiving the Eucharist can help you grow closer to him. Receiving this sacrament also brings you closer to everyone in his family, the Church. Think about it. What greater experience can you share with other human beings than together hearing

When you realize that this great sacrament makes you one with Christ, body and soul, you can
see why the Eucharist is meant only for those who are free of serious sin. No one in a state of mortal sin should receive Eucharist without first seeking God’s forgiveness through the Sacrament of Penance. Less serious sins, however, are forgiven by the very act of receiving the Eucharist, a fact which just goes to show how much God wants
