What the Church Believes and Teaches
CATECHISM HANDBOOK
What the Church Believes and Teaches
Creation (page 8)
God’s Revelation to People (page 7)
Read aloud the Creation section on page 8, and stress that we share God’s truth, beauty, and goodness through his initiative.
Arrange the young people into pairs, and turn to page 7. Instruct them to read God’s Revelation to People, and share ways that God showed love to the People of Israel and to all people through Jesus.
Have the young people close their What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Visions, page 5.
Catholic Faith Word ● Eucharist (page 5) Read aloud this week’s definition. Then take time to read the Eucharist quote at the bottom of page 5. Remind the young people to read this quote in each of their Visions lessons.
Our Catholic Faith ● Jesus’ Table Welcomes All People (page 5) Read together this article to connect the Gospel parable and the celebration of the Eucharist. Give the young people time to make their lists; then have volunteers share their lists with the class.
Live the Gospel
Objectives ● The young people will:
● Trace how food is distributed throughout the world.
● Explore ways that the Church, governments, families,
and schools feed hungry people.
● Discover how offering meals and hospitality during
disasters is a way to express our Christian faith.
Living the Gospel ● Who’s Hungry in Our World? (pages 6–7) Call on volunteers to read aloud the three introductory paragraphs. Have a bag of pretzels available. Lead the class in the pretzel activity to illustrate the problems of world food distribution. Note: If food is not permitted in your program, substitute slips of paper—anything that can indicate those who have plenty and those who have little. Introduce
this activity by viewing the pictures purple box that runs along
the bottom of pages 6 and 7. Read aloud the description of the three tables in the quotation from the U.S. Bishops’ document on economic life and hunger.
Then talk through the four legs on the table illustration. The bishops describe the four “legs“ in their pastoral reflection. Help the young people identify ways each leg touches their lives. Leg 1: Free school lunches, food programs for new mothers, food stamps, Earned Income Tax Credit. Leg 2: Use local examples. Leg 3: Many businesses do projects such as build Habitat for Humanity homes and collect for food pantries. Leg 4: Invite the students to share in small groups and then with the whole group.
Catholic Leaders ● Chef José Andrés, World Central Kitchen (page 8) Chef José Andrés and World Central Kitchen have been in the news many times over the last few years, most recently in response to the war in Ukraine. The WCK team arrives during an emergency situation or after a natural disaster, quickly sets up kitchens, and makes thousands of meals for first responders and the victims. Read this feature together.
Closing Prayer This Monday, October 16, more than 150 countries will participate in World Food Day. This day brings attention and action to the issues related to hunger. Invite
the young people to honor this day by giving thanks for food and the people with whom they share a meal. Catholics pray the Blessing Before Meals to give thanks to God for their food. Before we receive the Holy Eucharist at Mass, we join hands and share the Lord’s Prayer. Stand in a circle, and pray The Lord’s Prayer together.
