P. 18
October 15, 2023 • 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time Lesson Theme: God sets a table for all people.
Open the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbook to page 8. Together, read
aloud the Creation section. Stress that we share God’s truth, beauty, and goodness through his initiative. Then turn to page 7 and read God’s Revelation to People. Ask your child to share some ways God showed love to the People of Israel and to all people through Jesus.
Once you have completed this section of the lesson, close the handbook and return to Visions, page 5. Catholic Faith Word l Eucharist (page 5) Read aloud this week’s definition. Then take time to read the
Eucharist quote at the bottom of page 5.
Our Catholic Faith l Jesus Welcomes All People (page 5) Read aloud this article to connect the Gospel parable and the celebration of the Eucharist. Invite your child to make the list at the bottom of page 5.
Live the Gospel
Living the Gospel l Who’s Hungry in Our World? (pages 6–7) Introduce the activity by looking at the pictures and captions in the purple box. Then read the introductory paragraphs on page 6. Adjust the activity for home use by using poster board or a sheet of construction paper to create a pie chart modeled after the one on page 6. You will also need 100 pretzels or other small snack food (or use stickers or small pieces of paper). Read aloud the introductory paragraphs. Have your child read the Distribution Data section and label the pie chart accordingly: 15, 25 and 60 percent. Remind your child that these represent percentages of the world’s population. Then have your child count out and distribute the pretzels in each section of the chart according to the directions in blue type. Ask if this is a just or unjust situation. Have your child share the chart with other family members to explain world food distribution.
Discuss the four legs on the table illustration on pages 6-7. The concept of the four legs is often used by church leaders to describe how various groups can work together to make sure everyone has enough to eat. Together, identify ways each leg touches lives. For example: Leg 1: Free school lunches, food programs for new mothers, food stamps, Earned Income Tax Credit. Leg 2: Use local examples. Leg 3: Many businesses do projects such as build Habitat for Humanity homes and collect for food pantries. Leg 4: Discuss ways your family helps. Ask: Is it enough? Can we do more?
Catholic Leaders l Chef José Andrés, World Central Kitchen (page 8) Chef José Andrés and World Central Kitchen have been in the news many times over the last few years, most recently in response to the war in Ukraine. Read this feature together.
Closing Prayer On Monday, October 16, more than 150 countries will celebrate World Food Day, bringing attention and action to the issues related to hunger. Honor this day as a family by giving thanks for the food you eat and for each other at every meal on this day. You can say a traditional meal blessing or come up with one of your own. Then pray the Our Father together.
