SUNDAY GOSPEL 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 22:1–14
Parable of the Wedding Feast
Narrator: Once again, Jesus told a parable to the chief priests and elders of the people.
Jesus: The Kingdom of Heaven is like a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. He sent servants to bring the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. He sent other servants a second time to bring the guests to the wedding.
King: Tell them the banquet is prepared. My cattle have been killed. Come, the feast is ready!
Jesus: Some of the guests ignored the invitation. One guest went to his farm, another to his business. The rest of the guests insulted the king’s servants and killed them. The king was so furious that he sent his army to destroy the murderers and burn their city. Then he sent his servants out to invite other guests.
King: The banquet is ready, but the guests I invited were not worthy to come. Go out into the streets and invite to the feast anyone you find.
Jesus: The servants gathered guests, both bad and good, to fill the wedding hall for the feast. When the king came to meet the guests, he saw a man who was not dressed properly for a wedding feast.
King: My friend, why did you come to the feast not dresssed in a wedding garment?
Jesus: The man had nothing to say. The king had his servants throw the man out.
King: Tie him hand and foot and throw him out into the darkness outside to cry and grind his teeth.
Jesus: Many are invited, but few are chosen.

God Invites Everyone to His Feast
This Sunday, Jesus once again shares a parable to help people recognize themselves. Are they the ones who refuse the king’s invitation? These are people who do not believe in Jesus. Or are they the ones who come properly dressed and ready to celebrate? These are the chosen ones who accept Jesus’ invitation and believe. They will not be cast out of the feast.
God invites all people to come to his feast and to belong to the family of God. Every Sunday, Catholics around the world gather to worship God at Mass. All are welcomed to the Lord’s
Table to celebrate the Eucharist. But each person must make the decision whether to go or not.
Jesus sends his first disciples to “make disciples all nations” (Matthew 28:19). These disciples travel and preach the Good News. Some people accept their invitation to become Christians. Others reject it. But, even today, it is our duty to offer people Christian hospitality and charity. We ds
are called to be patient and hopeful even if people turn down our
for Children
invitation. (CCC, 1971).
