                      Step 13 (5 Minutes)
Conclude with We Join in Prayer. Assign a reader. Take the part of leader. Gather the young people around the table and ask them to quiet themselves for prayer. Play a suitable selection as background music. Help the young people to feel more comfortable with the symbolic action of signing themselves with the holy water by taking your turn rst.
   Additional Activities
Journaling
The gifts of the Holy Spirit are often easily recognized
in experiences of service. For a journal starter, ask the young people to recall examples of service that they have been involved in or have been aware of. Then have the young people write answers to one of these questions:
• What gifts of the Spirit were used or developed during these experiences?
• WhichgiftsoftheHolySpirithaveyoualready seen active in your life? Which gifts do you wish you could develop more fully? Why?
• Describeapersonyouknowwhomodelsagiftof the Holy Spirit.
This provides a good introduction to Step 6: Activity 3. See page 43 of this Catechist Guide. Encourage the young people to turn their prayerful re ection into action.
Learning about the Christian Way of Life—
Decision Making
Have the young people take another look at the situations in Step 2: Activity 1. See page 40 of this guide. Ask them to discuss what gifts of the Holy Spirit could help them in making their decisions.
Learning about Catholic Tradition—
Blessing of Water
Invite someone who has a background in Scripture studies to help the young people understand the blessing of the water that is used during the Easter Vigil. A Scripture scholar’s insights may prove invaluable
to young people’s ability to understand their own
Christian initiation in the context of God’s saving work throughout all of history. Provide the young people with copies of Handout 7—Blessing of Baptismal Water.
Experiencing Catholic Tradition—Baptism
Find out when a Baptism will next be celebrated at
a Mass at your parish. Arrange to attend with your group. Before the celebration, give a brief step-by-step presentation on what will be happening during the Rite of Baptism. Gather with the group after the celebration to talk with the young people about what they observed and how they felt about it.
If your parish celebrates Baptism only in private family celebrations, you’ll need to check with your pastor and probably with the parents of the child(ren) to request permission for your group to be present.
Learning about Catholic Tradition—
The Fruits of the Spirit
Review with the young people the fruits of the Holy Spirit as presented in the Catholic Literacy feature on page 5. Have the young people work in small groups to de ne or describe two or three of the fruits of the Spirit. Provide a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church for each group. They will nd the index and glossary helpful in de ning and describing the fruits of the Spirit.
Give the groups about 10 minutes to work and then ask each group to share its de nitions and descriptions with the large group.
