Objective (10 minutes)
• The children will recognize that Jesus gives his followers the Holy Spirit and calls them to forgive others.
Gather in the open space to review the previous lesson. Recall that getting along together and living lives of love means keeping the commandments, acting like Jesus, being sorry, changing actions, and forgiving others.
Tell the children how Jesus’ followers got very scared and ran away when he was arrested. Peter followed Jesus. But when servants at the high priest’s house asked him if he was Jesus’ friend, Peter said he didn’t even know who
Jesus was. Only the disciple Jesus loved—whose name we think was John—Mary, Jesus’ mother, Mary Magdalene, and some other women stood by the cross when Jesus died.
Ask the children why they think the disciples were so afraid. They could be arrested and killed, too. Tell the children that after Jesus was put to death, his followers gathered together and locked the room.
Ask the children to imagine how they felt. Scared, ashamed, sad, confused.
Distribute copies of Lesson 5 to the children. Hold up the page- one illustration of Jesus coming to his followers in that locked room. Ask how the children think Jesus’ followers felt. Amazed, excited, thinking it is too good to be true.
Assign the parts of Storyteller 1, Storyteller 2, and Jesus and ask those children to read aloud what happened when Jesus came.
Discuss:
• What words in the story show what Jesus wanted his followers to do? Peace be with you. I am sending you to all people.
• What actions show what Jesus wanted his followers to do?
He came to them, showed them his wounds, sent them to forgive others, and breathed his spirit into them.
• What part of the Mass uses words from this story? Sign of peace and the frequent greetings of peace that priest and people exchange.

 FIRST RECONCILIATION
LESSON 5
Jesus Gives Us the Holy Spirit
Storyteller 1: Most of Jesus’ followers ran away when he was arrested and then put to death.
Storyteller 2: Three days later, they gathered together to pray. They still felt afraid, so they locked the doors.
Why do Jesus’ followers feel afraid?
Storyteller 1: Suddenly, Jesus came and stood in the room with them.
Jesus: Peace be with you.
Storyteller 2: Jesus showed his friends the nail marks in his hands and the spear mark in his side.
Jesus: Peace be with you. My Father sent me to you. Now I am sending you to all people.
Storyteller 1: Jesus breathed on his followers.
Jesus: Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive people’s sins, they
are forgiven. If you do not forgive people’s sins, they are not forgiven.
Based on John 20:19–2
