Eating Together Is a Way of Making FriendsObjective (10 minutes)• The children will appreciate eating together as a time of remembering and sharing.Have the children gather in theopen space. Ask them when they eat together as a family. When else do they gather to eat? Maybe at special times like birthdays or holidays such as Thanksgiving or Christmas. Why are these times special? We share food and stories with one another. Have someof the children describe one of their meals. You might start by simply describing a mealtime from your house. For example: Mom puts the food on the table. Dad puts the bib on the baby. We pass the food around the table. We say grace. We eat and talk about what happened during the day.Have the children look at page 4. Read the title of the page together. Identify the picture of Jesus sharing a meal with Zacchaeus. Recall brie y what happened in that story.Look at the family meal picture. Have the children compare this to their family meal situation.Read the rst three sentences of the text aloud to conclude this part of the discussion.Read aloud the second part of the text. Conclude by explaining that the Mass is a special meal in which we share the Body and Blood of Christ.Have the children return to their work area. Locate the stickers for this page—the chalice and host stickers. Tell them that as they apply the stickers, you will read the bread and wine blessing prayers that the Jewish people use to bless their Sabbath food. As they apply the stickers, read the blessings.401Eating Together Is a Way of Making FriendsEating together is a way Jesus shares with his followers.
