CATECHISM HANDBOOK
Ask: What special things do you and your family do on Sundays? We go to Mass to praise and thank God. We rest and spend time with family. Ask: Why do you think Sunday is called the Lord’s Day? Sunday is the day that Jesus rose from the dead. Direct the children to find page 20 in their Catechism handbooks. Read the paragraph about Sunday.
Ask: Whose family has a special meal together on Sundays? Talk about how a family meal can reflect the Mass—we gather together, remember and share stories, give thanks, share a meal, and leave the meal nourished in body and spirit.
Print the word Eucharist on the board. Ask: What is a special family meal we share in the fall? Thanksgiving. Explain that the word Eucharist means “thanksgiving.” We gather
to give thanks to God at every Mass. Turn to page 22 in the Catechism handbooks to learn more about the Eucharist by reading aloud the top two paragraphs.
Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Good News, page 4.

Objective The children will identify the Third Commandment.
Activity l Third Commandment (page 4)
Ask: Why is Sunday called the Lord’s Day? Jesus rose from the dead on a Sunday. Every Sunday is like a little Easter.
Invite the children to find the activity on the top of page 4. Read aloud the title and the first paragraph. If time allows, direct the children to turn to page 31 in their Catechism handbooks
to read over the Ten Commandments, especially the Third Commandment.
Read aloud the second paragraph. Then refer again to the activity title. Distribute pencils and invite the children to write down their favorite things about Sunday. Share as time allows. Then direct the children to complete the rest of the activity.
Activity l We Go to Mass Booklet (pages 1–4) Gather in the work area and distribute scissors. Invite the children to open Good News so that pages 1 and 4 are facing up. Direct them to cut on the dashed slanted line. Then have them turn over the piece they have cut so the title of the activity is faceup.
Direct the children to make accordion folds on the solid fold lines. The small picture at the bottom of “Who Can Belong?” shows what this folding activity will look like. It is not difficult.
When all the booklets are ready, read through them together, page by page. Invite the children to describe what is happening in each picture. For each side, begin with the shortest page and read through to the tallest page. Encourage them to bring the booklet with them to Sunday Mass to help them follow along.
Closing Prayer Gather in a prayer circle. Invite the children to think about the people from their families, neighborhood, and class with whom they go to Mass on Sundays. Direct them to each choose one name they want to say as part of the prayer.
Teacher: God says, “Come to my feast. Bring a friend.”
Child: I will come with ____________.
Close your prayer and gathering by playing and singing “Come, Do This in Memory of Me” (CD-1, #20).
Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families, do the Family Corner activities and prayer, and read the Eucharist Quote together.
