Objectives l The children will:
l Identify an invitation they would like to receive.
l Recognize how they include or exclude other children.
Gather in a circle and invite a child to point to the current Sunday on a Church Year calendar. Play and sing “Come Do This in Memory of Me” (CD-1, #20).
Gathering Prayer Pray:“Jesus, you invite us to be part of your family through Baptism. Thank you for inviting us to your special feast—the Mass and Holy Communion. Help us to always say yes to your invitations.” The children respond, “Amen.”
Cover Activity (page 1) Gather in the work area. Invite the children to identify the three party pictures on the cover. Ask: What do you enjoy doing at parties? Read aloud the directions for the activity. Distribute pencils or crayons. Direct the children to print their own names on the top line, choose the kind of party they want to attend, and fill in the other blanks by imagining what they will do and eat at the party. Take time for the children to share their invitations. Ask: How does it feel to be invited? How does it feel to be left out?
Story l Who Can Belong? (page 2) Ask: Does anyone recognize the symbol next to the Know question? It’s the emblem for the Cub Scouts of America.
Read the story aloud to the children or invite volunteers to read it aloud, one paragraph at a time. When you finish, invite volunteers to retell the story, one detail at a time. Ask: Why do you think Brayden acts the way he does?
Discuss the story using the Know question. Encourage thoughtful insight and discussion. This discussion prepares them for the Gospel.
Activity l Stretch and Move Have the children leave their copies of Good News at their worktables and gather in a circle in the open area, holding hands. Have them take two steps back and then drop hands. Lead them in this stretching activity:
Stretch, stretch your hands up high. / Now let your fingers fly. / Stomp your feet, both left and right, left and right. / Now stretch again—up, up, up high!
Discover Gospel and Doctrine
Objectives l The children will:
l
Recognize that God invites everyone to Jesus’ feast of the Eucharist.
l
Identify the importance of participating in Sunday Mass.
Stand and sing “Gospel Acclamation” (CD-2, #24) to prepare for the proclamation of the Gospel.
Sunday Gospel l The Wedding Feast (page 3) Explain that Sunday’s Gospel is a story of a king who invites people to a party. Invite the children to listen to how people respond to the invitation. Assign the parts of Jesus, King, Messengers, Shopkeeper, Farmer, and Others. Direct these children to proclaim the Gospel. Reflect a moment in silence.
Discuss the Gospel using the Know questions. It is important that the children conclude that God, like the king, will keep inviting us over and over. God wants us to be part of Jesus’feast—the Eucharist here on earth and at God’s table in Heaven.
Catholic Faith Word l Eucharist (page 4) Read aloud the definition. Explain that Eucharist can mean both Holy Communion and the Mass. Emphasize that the bread and wine really become Jesus’ Body and Blood.
Activity l Gospel Creative Drama Direct the children to take the part of the king and show with their faces and bodies how he felt at different points in the story. Then direct them
to pretend to be the people who give excuses for not coming. Next, direct them to pretend to be the people who did accept
the invitation. Ask: What would those people have said to the messengers? Finally, put the whole story together and act it out.
Connecting Gospel and Doctrine
(page 4) Read this paragraph together. Emphasize that participating in Jesus’ feast of the Eucharist helps us get to Heaven where we will sit at God’s table.
Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.
