Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells about a king who keeps inviting guests for his son’s wedding feast until he fills the hall. Matthew dwells on the fate of the guests who refused the king’s invitation. Promise stresses instead the desire of the king to share his happiness with everyone around him.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
God invites all people to belong to his family, the Church. He wants all people to share in the great feast of the Eucharist. Receiving Holy Communion at Mass prepares us to sit at God’s table in Heaven.
“Since the Eucharist is the ‘source and summit of the Christian life,’ catechesis for the Eucharist recognizes it as the heart of Christian life for the whole Church, for dioceses and parishes, and
for each individual Christian” (NDC, 36.3, citing Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium), 11).
Sharing the Lesson with Families
Encourage parents to teach their child to think of Sunday Mass as a celebration. Suggest that parents help their child identify the celebration elements—people gathered, music, stories, special food.
