Extending the Lesson
Saints and Feast Days to Celebrate
l October 16: World Food Day – This observance raises awareness about world hunger, how famines and crop failures displace millions of people, and how eating nutritious, balanced diets can benefit us all.
l October 16: Saint Marguerite d’Youville (CAN) Before turning thirty, Marguerite had lost her father, husband, and four of her six children. Her sufferings led to a religious conversion and her cofounding a group dedicated to helping the
poor. This group became the religious order of the Grey Nuns. Marguerite is a patron saint of widows and those in difficult marriages.
l October 16: Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque – Visions of Jesus led Margaret Mary to promote devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Other sisters in her order were suspicious of her visions, but a Jesuit priest declared her visions authentic. She is a patron saint of polio sufferers, orphans, and those devoted to the Sacred Heart.
