                       October 15, 2023 • 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sunday Readings: Isaiah 25:6–10a; Philippians 4:12–14,19–20; Matthew 22:1–14
  For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
Jesus continues to use parables in this Sunday’s Gospel. He tells of a king who wants to share the joy of his son’s wedding. Don’t we all want to share good times with others? This parable, however, has a deeper meaning. Jesus invites us to share in the greatest celebration ever, the gift of the Holy Eucharist. This parable asks us what kind of guests we are. Do we ignore the invitation, or do we go with joy? Do we participate in Holy Mass, or are we like statues in the pews?
Matthew wrote his Gospel in the A.D. 80s, after the Romans had destroyed the Jewish Temple. Jesus, for Christians, became the new center of their faith. Matthew also wondered why so many Jews—the first people invited—rejected Christianity, and why so many Gentiles accepted it. The king invites all of humanity to the great feast, but we are free to accept or reject the invitation.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
The Constitution on the Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council tells us that the Eucharist is “the source and summit of the Church’s life.”The Catechism adds that in the Eucharist “Christ associates his Church and all her members with the sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving offered once for all on the cross to his Father; by this sacrifice he pours out the graces of salvation on his Body which is the Church” (CCC, 1407).
