Believes and Teaches handbooks.
Live the Gospel
Objectives ● The children will:
● Create a banquet based on God’s criterion of welcoming everyone.
● Identify words related to family and Church celebrations.
Living the Gospel ● Welcome! God’s Banquet
Is for Everyone (pages 6—7) This is a fun activity that drives home the point that God wants everyone to enjoy creation and community. Together, read the first column on page 6, which presents the themes of both Sunday’s Gospel and the First Reading from Isaiah.
Read aloud the directions for the activity. Make sure everyone understands what to do by brainstorming together who could be invited and what foods would be good. You may wish to arrange the children in pairs to complete the activity. As the children work, go around the room asking how the people they choose will talk together. Gather in a large group to share how the guests enjoyed the banquet and each other.
Puzzle ● Celebration Puzzle (page 8) Have the children solve the puzzle in class or complete it at home. Answers: Thanksgiving, Confirmation, homecoming, victory, shower, birthday, wedding, party.
Closing Prayer Many Catholics pray the Blessing Before Meals to give thanks to God for their food. Before sharing Eucharist at Mass, Catholics join hands and pray the Lord’s Prayer. Stand in a circle, and pray the Lord’s Prayer together (page 52 in handbook).

CATECHISM HANDBOOK
What the Church Believes and Teaches
Praise and Celebrate (page 15) What Happens at the Eucharist? (pages 21–23)
Have the children turn to page 15 in their handbooks.
Explain that this introduction presents Mass as a family reunion. Recall that the king in the Gospel invited people to a joyous family banquet celebrating his son’s wedding. You may also wish to read this Sunday’s First Reading, Isaiah 25:6–10a, which is about a banquet to feed all people.
Ask children about when they have attended family reunions or wedding receptions. Emphasize people gathering together, stories, and time to play with cousins. Read aloud the fourth paragraph.
Turn to page 21. Have children volunteer to read aloud the four paragraphs about Eucharist in the second column. Stress that Eucharist is about thanks and praise. Read aloud the remainder of the section, emphasizing the key points for the children.
Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Venture, page 5.
Catholic Faith Word
●
Liturgy (page 5) Introduce the Our Catholic Faith feature by reading the definition aloud.
Our Catholic Faith ● Liturgy Is the Church’s Public Worship (page 5) Ask the children to identify the part of the Mass in each photo; then read this article on the two main parts of the Mass: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Ask the children to list ways that the Mass is
like a meal—people gather to eat together; the altar is a table; the Body and Blood of Christ are food. Give the children time to complete the activity, referring to pages 47-48 in the handbooks where necessary. Answers: 1. First and Second Readings, Responsorial Psalm, Gospel Reading, Homily, Profession of Faith, Prayer of the Faithful; 2. Preparation of the Gifts, Eucharistic Prayer, The Lord’s Prayer, Sign of Peace, Holy Communion.
