United in Mind and Purpose

“I urge you, brothers and sisters…that all of you agree in what you say…that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose” (1 Corinthians 1:10).

For the past fifteen years I have periodically attended one week of the summer programs at Chautauqua Institution, near Jamestown, NY. I serve as a Catholic chaplain. Thousands of people come each season to attend workshops, hear excellent speakers, and enjoy the entertainment. There is a wonderful expression of unity among those of different religions and Christian denominations. Much emphasis has been given to understanding the Abrahamic religions—Judaism, Muslim and Christianity. The Episcopalians freely offer their chapel for our daily Masses. The Methodists share their facilities for Catholic lectures. The Presbyterians give free coffee and pastries each morning. Hundreds attend a common worship service to start the day. Fellowship thrives. All the people have their own beliefs and practices, but they are united in mind and purpose. Lord, help us find peace through unity.
