We lift up our hearts!

“The Lord lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down” (Psalm 145:14).

At the beginning of the Eucharistic Prayer, there is a brief dialogue between the priest and congregation. In one form, the priest says, “Lift up your hearts,” and the people respond, “We lift them up to the Lord.” I like to think of God’s love and mercy as consistently pulling our spirits upward with the same strong force as gravity pulls our bodies downward. We cannot see or touch gravity, yet we know it is real. But its power influences only material bodies. However, there are many other powers on earth that pull our spirits downward with that same type of gravitational influence. Our challenge is to regulate with moderation these good and natural earthly attractions and to avoid those that are harmful and sinful. It gives us strength to realize God’s love and mercy are constantly uplifting our spirits to a higher level and a holier way of life.

Lord, may your love and mercy lift up our lives.
